PEOPLE BATTENING ON CHARITABLE AID
WHILE EARNING FULL TIME. PROPERTY OWNERS WHO GOT FINANCIAL HELP, Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. The somewhat extraordinary fact was revealed at a meeting of the Wellington Hospital board to-day that a family of four have for some months past been* receiving charitable aid to tho extent of £1 5s a week from tho social welfare committee, while during tho period tho income of the family amounted to £2l 15s a month. When the committee made this discovery, the relief, of course, was promptly stopped. Air. G. Petherick, chairman of the Social Welfare committee, informed the Hospital boaid that a family which the committee had been helping was also in receipt of £2l 15s a month. There were only four iu tbo family and it was a sad case, so far as the husband was concerned. The committee only knew part of the facts and investigations showed that what he now stated was correct. There was no doubt tho family was receiving £2l 15s a month and had purchased a piano at a cost of £l9O, although only a deposit had been paid on it. Mr. A. J. McCurdy said that in another case it was found that the last instalment on a piano had just been paid and anothor person receiving help was found to own a section.
