NEGRO LEADER
POLITICS AND A NEWSPAPER Marcus Garvey, so-called King of Africa, has returned to Jamaica to seek a seat in the Jamaica Legislature and to begin the publication of a negro ilcwspapcr called the Black Man. Since his return from America and Europe, Garvey, not chagrined by his treatment in London and his arrest in New York and Canada, is making his presence felt in his homo land of Jamaica. Ho lias purchased property there valued at £SOOO, including a printing shop, and proposes to issue a daily newspaper. He has announced his intention to stand for election as a Legislative Council member for the parish of St. Andrew. ~ , , , , , If Garvey should bo elected—and the chances arc that he will succeed,
due to the large number of negroes in the parish—he will have full scope for his powers of oratory in tlio Colonial Council chamber. He may also benefit by the mental discipline which tho new political atmosphere will provide for him. Garvey will now have an excellent opportunity to manifest his practical interest in the masses whoso cause ho professes to have at heart. Thousands of negroes in Jamaica are out of employment at the present time.
