Mr. P. C. Frceth is a visitor to Palmerston North.

Mr William McLeod, aged 79, an artist for many years associated with the Bulletin, is dead, reports a Sydney message.

Mr C. Ercnstrom, of Ferguson street, has recovered sufficiently from the effects of the poison taken in mistake for tea on Sunday while at work in the Palmerston North Power house, to be ablo to return to his homo from hospital. An Ottawa message reports that the Hon. W. S. Fielding, former Minister of Finance for Canada for 15 consecutive years, died on Sunday, aged SI vears. Prior to entering the Federal Cabinet in IS9G, he was Premier of Nova Scotia for 12 years. In 1897 ho introduced in the Commons a British preferential tariff.

Mr A. H. Cockayne, who has been appointed assistant Director-General of Agriculture, is well and favourably known to the whole of the farming community of New Zealand. He entered the service of the Department of Agriculture in 1901, as assistant diologist and was appointed biologist in 1909. In 1923 he became Director of the Fields Division, and last year, in addition to that post, he was also appointed Director of the Plant hcscareli station at Palmerston North. It is understood that his new appointment carries with it the directorship of tlio Plant, research station. He is a recognised authority on botany and plant diseases. The new position will, be assumed in about a month, and it is regretted that it will necessitate Mr Cockayne’s proceeding to Wellington. His transfer will, of course, leave vacant the position of Director of the Fields Division, and it is understood that considerable changes in organisation arc likely.
