Tryouts at Shannon
BOTH GAMES WON BY VISITING FIFTEENS
There was a good attendance of football fans on the Shannon domain when the two representative teams of the combined unions met in their annual e'ash. It was an ideal day for football and the ground, though sticky, was in good condition. Manawatu B team had an easy win by 22—9 over its opponents, its back division being too strong altogether. The A team won its game but another five minutes would have seen a reversal of the final decision, as Manawatu was falling to pieces. The final score was 15 14. Horowhenua A V. Manawatu A, The teams lined out as follow: Horowhenua (red and black): Ryder Eobinson, Stevenson, Taylor, Graham, Bevan, P. W. Parata, N Htikaraia, Pratt, McDonald, Satherley, Tatana, Hanna, Dalzell, T. Parata. Manawatu (green and white): S Bramwell, Strange, Fletcher, Eliott, K Bramwell, Heise, Thompson, Hutchin son, Eight, Neild, Miles, McKenzie Conrad, Crawford, Boldt. Reds kicked off downfield, W. Parata. Bevan and Graham carrying on until stopped by a forward pass. A freo kick to reds saw Taylor miss the posts. Graham and Stevenson carried on but Eobinson knocked on and slopped tko movement. Dalzell dribbled further down but the ball went into touch by the green line. From the lineout, Dalzell sent to Bevan but a free kick to Manawatu found touch in the centre of the field. Heise got going m the right direction, Ryder stopping him with a kick to touch. N. Bramwell sent the ball well up, but Ryder again found touch in greens’ twenty-five. From a scrum W. Parata dived through but punted too hard and Heise forced. When Ryder attempted a field goal, tho ball did'not rise. W. Parata and Robinson again, pressed, the latter being collared on the line. The attack was kept up until greens forced. S. Bramwell eventually cleared to touch in the centre. From the lineout, Bevan failed to accept a pass and Thompson cutting in sent Hutchinson over between the posts. Fletcher converted.— Manawatu 5, Horowhenua nil. . Red forwards, led by Hakaraia got in good work and a penalty enabled Tatana to convert.— Manawatu 5, Horowhenua 3. „ , Horowhenua, led by Tatana, again pressed but offside saw Manawatu find touch in midfield. From the lineout tin: red skipper secured and dribbled through to score, his attempt to convert failing— Manawatu 5, Horowhenua 6. Tatana threw across field to Hakaraia who sent to Dalzell, who passed 1 out 'to Bevan who failed to connect, the ball going to touch. Stevenson carried the attack to greens’ twentyfive where from a scrum, W. Parata sent to Taylor only for the lfitter to be held up by a forward pass. A marie stopped the attack, but Neild being offside gave reds a chance to resume. A passing bout by W. Parata, Graham and Stevenson was stopped by a forward pass and Manawatu returned to red territory, where Heise intercepting a pass, sent Higlit over, Fletcher goalIng.—Manawatu 10, Horowhenua 6. This was still the position at half time. Heise was unfortunately injured and Mullins came on. After the lemons, the game went up and down for some time, greens doing most of tho attacking. A free kick let the green backs in motion but the ball went to touch. N. Bramwell dummied three opponents and passed to Mullins, to Fletcher, who missed. Soon after Fletcher sent Strange, over, the former player converting 4with an excellent kick.— Manawatu 15, Horowhenua C. Horowhenua then woke up. Led by Tatana and Pratt, the forwards compelled greens to force. Mullins gained temporary respite by a mark but Stev enson, W. Parata and Taylor returned. The green three-quarter line made several attempts to go through but the red defence was sounder than in tho first spell. Eventually a forward rush led by McDonald permitted Taylor to go over, Tatana converting.—Manav.mtu 15, Horowhenua 11. Tatana took the game up to the twenty-five where from the ruck, Hanna went over, Tatana failing to convert. — Manawatu 15, Horowhenua 14. No further score was recorded though reds mado determined attempts to get through. Mr. J. O’Connor controlled the game. There was little to choose between the two teams. Strange was the best v.ing three-quarter on the field but Horowhenua did not give him a chance. Heise was playing well until he went off. Mullins was good. Of the forwards, Crawford and Conrad were outstanding. Of tho Horowhenua team, Tatana and T. Parata were outstanding forwards whilst the rest worked yvery well. W. Parata, as half back, was brilliant, and has no equal in the combined unions. Graliam ivas tlic bettor of the two frve* eighths. Taylor was the best threequartcr. Robinson being weak. Ryder at back was fair, but no patch on Johnson.
HOROWHENUA B v. MANAWATU B.
The tcarus lined out as follow: — Horowhenua (red and blue): Johnson, J. Broughton, Bull, E. Broughton, Wallace, Walls, Barnes, Ransfieid, Moodie, Andrews, Kcnatn, McDonnell, Payne, Beattie, Eparima. Manawatu (green and white): Wasley, Cochrane, Page, Dcwe, Pawson, Ormond, Fuller. Kobertson, _ Heard, Sutherland, Lynch, Baker, Atolls, 'V. Higkt, Snell. Manawatu kicked off downfield and compelled Johnson to force. A free kick to reds found touch over halfway and the forwards, led by Andrews, tools the game to the twenty-five. From thy lineout, Ormond broke away but a kuocko-n stopped play and J. Broughton cleared. A run by Cochrane whu passed in, sent Dewe over to open up greens’ account, Ormond failing with the kick— Manawatu 3, Horowhenua ■nil. Broughton had to leave the Held with an injury to his leg, Picard taking his plaeff. The Southerners then brought
play to the twenty-five where a free kick was awarded to Manawatu. Meta Johnson took tho ball, and returned it to tho other twenty-five, where a penalty for offside shortly after saw him equalise the score. From a lineout Wallace, Bull and Picard took the game well up but a kick from a mark found touch in midfield. A freo kick to. reds ifor offsido enabled Wallace to gain oQ yards. Here Ormond intercepted a pass and sent the ball to Pawson who put Page over between the posts. It was a lucky try, as there was an apparent knockon which was missed. Ormond failed with the easy kick. —Manawatu 6, Horowhenua 3. Bull and Picard took the game to the Manawatu twenty-five after a force but Page carried the game well down where offsido allowed Horowhenua to find touch in the opposing territory. Picard made an attempt to go through, but through punting too hard, Wasley forced. From the lineout, Ransfield, Bull, Wallaeo and Broughton took the ball back to tho twenty-five, where a penalty permitted Johnson to equalise again.— Manawatu 6, Horowhenua 6. Ormond and Cochrane carried the game to the twenty-five, where a serum ensued, from which Heard went over, Ormond converting.— Manawatu 11, Horowhenua 6. No further score was added up to half time; reds were attacking hard and Johnson failed to accept two penalty kicks. On resuming play, Ted forwards led by Moodic dribbled up to touch on tho twenty-five. The ball went to Johnson, who kicked up and following up well, charged Wasley down, sending Payne over on the corner. Wallace failed' with the kick. —Manawatu 31, Horowhenua 9. Page made a good solo run. Picard grassed him and Payne took the ball back to greens’ twenty-five. Manawatu changed the venue and play allowed Ormond to have a shot at goal.. Johnson got the ball and with an excellent line kick, found touch in greens' country. From the lineout, Ransfield carried on but was collared. Walls seemed dazed when the ball came to him and cross kicked to touch with no advantage. Greens now pressed and a cross kick by Ormond sent Cochrane off with a vacant field in front of him. Dewe failed with the kick.— Manawatu 14, Horowhenua 9. Shortly after Johnson attempted to get over but the attack was turned after bad play and Walls ran through the field, with Payne after him, to score between the posts. Baker converted— Manawatu 19, Horowhenua 9. The final score came when Wallace marked and kicked to Cochrane, who ran well down and sent Dewe over on the corner. Baker failed to a( M thc major points. —Manawatu -2, Hoiowhenua 9. ~ , ~ Mr. P. McLeavoy controlled the game Manawatu B was altogether too strong for Horowhenua B in the bacK division, Ormond, Cochrane, Page and Dewe being responsible for some pretty work, bf the Horowhenua team, Payne and Andrews were the outstanding for* wards with McDonnell well up. Barnes, as half, was weak. Walls, at fiveeighths, played a poor game, with wild passes to empty spaces. Wallace was fair. In the back division, Bull was good, the other two failing to come up to scratch. Meta Johnson, at full back, was the best man in the position during both games, but his three-quarter would not drop back when he was up m front.

SHANNON V. OTAKI SCHOOLS.
An exciting game was played on the Shannon Domain on Saturday morning, when Shannon won its first game this season by 32 to nil. . Shannon was on the defensive for the first few minutes until Holden cleared with a line kick. Otald again pressed but the Shannon forwards dribbled back to Otaki’s line, where the defenders forced. Tho game returned to mid-iield for a while. _ McEwen (Shannon) raff up and passing to Holden sent him over unconverted. From a lineout, Mason well up but was collared, Jones looked like going over but was too selfish and was grassed. A few minutes later, Holden crossed again, Picard failing to goal. I. Easton led Shannon forwards in an attack but Jacob stopped him. A good passing rush by Satherley, Mason ana Easton sent Holden over again—9-rnl. The next score came when a rush by Shannon forwards enabled Mason to go over. No further score came before half time, when Shannon was attackin'*, Picard and Jones being prominent. On resuming, Shannon was soon in Otaki’s territory but the, visitors made a brief spurt. Bods were too strong however and after a forward rush, Satheley sent McEwen over, Satherley converting—Shannon 17-nil. Otaki quickly had to force under another Shannon attack. The respite was short lived as McEwen went over. The barrage was kept up, Satherley being next over, McEwan failing to convert —Shannon 23-nil. McEwan and I. Easton went for the next try but Jacob stopped them. Eventually, McEwan and Satherley attacked and the former scored between the posts, the kick being missed. The next two tries were also scored by McEwan, who made short -work of the Otaki team. The game finished — Shannon. 32, Otaki nil. The teams were entertained to morning tea in th*e school grounds by Miss Todd and the girls of Standard VI. at the conclusion of the game.
