OROUA BANKS TO BE REPAIRED AT ONCE
SETTLERS TO ASK FOR CUTS IN RIVER. Tho flood in the Oroua on Friday caused a particularly bad break, about i chains long and 7 feet deep, in the stopbank on Mr. Holden’s property and affects the properties of several settlers. Yesterday, an urgent meeting was called when Messrs Davis, Hands, Puklowski and Weddell met Messrs R. Tanner and A. Buchanan, members of the Manawatu-Oroua River board, Mr F. C. Hay, the engineer and A. H. M. Wright, engineer to the Manawatu Drainage board. It was decided, after examination of the broach, to call immediate tenders for the repair work and to open negotiations with the River board to have cuts made in. the Oroua (part of the River board’s modified scheme) so as to relieve further erosion of the banks. It was considered that the work was of a nature for which settlers would be quite within their rights, in asking for government relief financially/
