FUNCTION.. AT . ST, ,AJ*I>REW ’ S
' A very happy social was held in St. Andrew’s .Memorial hall last night when nearly 100 young people comprising members of the choir, the Biblo classes and the Sunday ' School staff assembled to do honour to two of their members and to bid them farewell upon their departure. His Worship tho Mayor, Mr. A. J. Graham, took charge of the gathering and made a most efficient chairman. During the evening, items were given by the Misses Kelly, Florie Ram, Mary Smith and Mr. A. Kennedy. A number of games and Competitions wero indulged in with great eagerness and heartiness. After supper Rev. G. T. Brown, M.A., gave: a word of welcome to any visitors, .especially to the students from Massey College who wero present. Ho then referred to Miss Kitty Bertram who had been a member of the Young Women’s Biblo class and tho Sunday ■ school' staff since her arrival in Palmerston North, seven months ago. He referred to her splendid • and willing help and expressed the hope that she would carry away as pleasant memories of her stay in Palmerston North as slip left behind her. On behalf of her colleagues ho presented her with a volume of Patterson Smyth’s “Lifo of Christ.”
• Miss Jean Curie, ho said, had been with them many years now and had been unfailing in her devotion to tho 1 work of the church. As a leader of tho primary department dt tho Sunday school and a member of the choir she had rendered valuable service, and left an indelible mark on the church. She was one of thoso people who, when she undertook a task, did it with absolute thoroughness. In tho choir slio was always in her place both at tho pracico and at the service and was ever willing to do her part in solo work and to do it effectively. Mr. and Mrs. Curie too had always been faithful supporters and quiet workers in the church and ho deeply regretted that the exigencies of circumstance were taking them away from Palmerston North. Ho deeply regretted their - departure to Wellington and wished them well in their new sphere. Ho then presented Mis? Cmio with a crystal rose bowl from members of the Sunday school staff and the choir.
r Mr. Curie, in a few happy and well chosen words, returned thanks for his daughter. Miss Bertram also in a neat littlo speech returned thanks. Mr., A. J. Graham also spoke. As organist of 1 St. Andrew’s he expressed his regret at the departuro of such a faithful, member of the choir as Miss Curie, and as Mayor he voiced tho regret'of "the city in losing such valued citizens. as Mr. and Mrs. Curie. He trusted that circumstances might one day bring them back again to Palmerston North. The gathering ended with the singing of “Auld Lang Sync.”
