CANADA’S FATE FROM U.S. TARIFF CHARGES

WATCHFUL WAITING. United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. Received Friday, 7 p.m. OTTAWA, June 21. While the progress of the United States tariff legislation is being followed hero with attention, there is no disposition to act hastily. The attitude of watchful waiting adopted by the government during the session of Parliament is being maintained. There is no tendency to ignore the proposed changes in the United States tariff schedules and the probable effect on Canada's trade is being noted. Changes upward in the Canadian tariff can only be made by Act of Parliament. The view held here is that there will probably bo no finality in the United States tariff until the fall. It will then bo timo enough to determine what the effect will bo on Canada and when that is determined, tho government has intimated that it is prepared to act in tho best interests of Canada. It seems probable the policy of tho government will be one of greatly increased trade within the Empire and the logical steps to achieve this is Canada-British preference. If tho United States shuts out Canadian products, a market for them will be sought elsewhere, preferably within the Empire.
