AUSTRALIA’S INCREASED BUSINESS WITH CANADA
INCREASED FIFTEEN FOLD IN 20 YEARS.
CURRANT MARKET CAPTURED,
United Service. Received Tuesday 7 p.m. VANCOUVER, May 27. Mr. R. A. Haynes, Australian commercial representative, in addressing the Canadian club, said: “Bald, figures of tho totals of Australian trade with Canada do not discloso what underlies them One item, sugar, makes all the difference in the world to the trade, we have done with you. Tako this item out of the total and wo find that under the trade agreement, Australia started trade under the new conditions with a total of 110,000 dollars worth of goods being sold in Cana.da partly under agreement. In the third year of tho agreement, these items reached an aggregate of one million and a half dollars. In the current year, there will bo further increases in moat, canned fruit, gelatine and other items.
Thanks to the agreement, Australia has captured tho market for currants and is gradually cstablisihng a trade in sultanas, Already, this season, Canada has bought twice as much as she bought in 1927. Tho frost in California has given us tho opportunity of selling canned peaches. "In 1909, the total sales of Australian produce to Canada amounted to 400,000 dollars. Last year, it was 5,800,000 dollars. That ,however, is only sufficient to place Australia on parity with Switzerland. "Your sales to Australia have received a setback recently but arc double what they were 20 years ago. They can bo increased by proper merchandising. ” In referring to the contentious point of tho ''A’es of Australian butter in Canada, tnc speaker said: "Can I make it clear Australian does not want to injure tho Canadian dairying or any other industry. If your costs are increased by local conditions, it is not for me to mako suggestions, only I must feci disappointed that something which does not affect our selling prices to you in any degreo precludes our selling you more than 216 tons of butter iu a year, when your total importations exceed 6000 tons.”
