FINED £IOO FOR SECOND OFFENCE
STRATFORD BOOKMAKER.
WILL GO TO GAOL IF HE IS CONVICTED AGAIN Per Press Association. STRATFORD, Last Night. At the Police Court to-day, Ernest A. Johnstone was fined £IOO for keeping a common gaming house and W illiam H. Lash, £25 for assisting. Three persons found on tho premises, were fined £1 each. Johnstone had one previous conviction for a similar offence and in addressing tho court, his counsel submitted that there could bo no question of imprisonment as no court had yet seen fit to imprison a bookmaker. lie hardly expected the Stratford court to bo the first in New Zealand to award imprisonment. Mr. SR, W. Tate S.M., interjected that it might be. Counsel said there was a case on record in which a £SO fine was con sidcred adequate for a fourth offence. In imposing the fines, the Magistrate said that whether or not the Stratford court should be the first in New Zealand to award imprisonment for book makers, if Jolmstone appeared a third time, he would go to prison and perhaps another person, for a second offence, might meet a similar fate.
