FIFTEEN EARTHQUAKES A DAY
J-lirohito, Emperor of Japan, is the ruler of a country which averages 13 earthquakes a day. Since the great disaster of 1923, which destroyed 'Yokohama and Tokio, 27,097 earthquakes have been recorded in the country. Two-thirds of this number were felt only by the semismogrnph, but the remainder were perceptible to human faculties. Seven of the shocks were serious, causing loss of life and extensive damage to property, says the Cape Argus. The young Emperor—lie is only 27 —has already given ample proof of his foresight and capacity to govern. The. problem of 13 earthquakes a day is enough to daunt any ruler, but with, the encouragement and advice of the Emperor, Japanese engineers arc tackling the problem ■frith commendable zeal. The rebuilding of Tokio, at present proceeding, is a monument to their industry and perseverance.
