COMPASS VARIATION

(To the Editor.) Sir, —Can you or any of your readers give details of the method of obtaining tho variation of a compass, and also a simple method with which a pocket compass may bo used. I should bo glad to know of any such method. — I am, etc., COMPASS. [Compass variation can be measured as follows: Feathcrstcn street and Broadway run along a line GO degrees east by north. By sighting the compass along the building line of one of the streets mentioned, a reading can bo obtained, the difference from 60 degrees cast being tho variation. The present variation in Palmerston North is approximately 11 degrees west. The variation at the time of the original magnetic survey of the district was 13 degrees 26 minutes 49 seconds cast. A pocket compass could be used by placing two small sights on the rim, marking north and south. Taking a sight along these lines, the declination could then be read from tho dial.]
