TARANAKI FARMERS’ VARIOUS NEEDS
CONFERENCE REMITS. Per Press Association. ELTHAM, Last Night. The twenty-ninth annual provincial conference of the South Taranaki Farmers’ Union met at Eltbam to-day, when tho following remits were carried: — That in view of the present relative positions of New Zealand and Canadian cheese on the English market and the alleged deterioration of New Zealand dairy produce, the conference urges that investigation bo made in order that the produce of this country may be brought into lino with that of its competitors. That the system of inspection of farms for noxious weeds be more rigidly carried out. but that tho conference protests against the formation of weed boards. That the dehorning of dairy stock bo made compulsory and breeds societies urged of tho desirability of this being done. That the conference again protests against unjust incidence of tax borno by the rural taxpayer as compared with the borough taxpayers under tho hospital rating system. That the present system of changing motor vehicle number plates annually is unsatisfactory. That regulations governing the uso of explosivos be amended to allow farmers to obtain explosives without the production of a police permit. That the conference protests against the proposed system of centralisation of schools. That the conference urges the adoption of form 111. of the primary schools syllabus and opposes tho introduction of junior high schools. That with a view to inculcating tho habit of thrift among school children, the facilities for saving afforded by the Post Office Savings Bank should be extended to schools, and the conference urges the Post Office to co-operate with the Education Department to establish agencies in the State schools for this purpose. That the Farmers’ Union takes strong exception to the present constitution of the Transport Board for the reason that the primary industries have practically no representation thereon. That branches of the union in South Africa be asked to oppose daylight saving. That tho conference urges upon tho Government that tho time has arrived when higher tariffs should operate upon American goods to offset the increased tariffs placed on New Zealand produce in America.
