Severe retrenchment on the railways is expected shortly owing to industrial turmoil, chiefly the coal crisis and dimished freights through motor competition. Treasurer Stevens to-day announced he had budgeted for a email surplus on the. railways but now expected a million deficit which would have to bo met in some manner.
