| BIRTHDAY PARTY. From Our Own Correspondent. To celebrate the sixth birthday ol her little daughter, Gwen, Alrs.J. Parsons on Saturday afternoon gave a children’s party at her home, Stanway. Bright sunshine enabled the young folk to enjoy a merry time out of doors, where games of many kinds were played and various races run. The prize-win-ners of the latter were Nola Jefferies and Willie Hoskin. A delicious tea was served in the dining-room, the pretty pink and white cake with its adornment of coloured candles,' being much admired. Among those present were Airs. Cuff, of Haleombe, greatgrandmother of Gwen Parsons, her aunt .Mrs. J. Ellery, of Bulls, Mrs. W. Robinson, “The Totaras” Stanway, and Airs. Kav Dudding, Haleombe; Ihe children being Baby Dudding, _ Joy, Dawn and Dennis Ellery, Ned Robinson, Nola and Zena Jefferies, Molly and - Thelma Miles, Pearl, Billie, and Howard Hoskin, Iris and Errol Craine, Konalr and Reggie Humphrey, Teddy and Herbert Alills and A era and Gordon Hine of Wellington. Hockey. A splendid game was played between the local hockey boys and Pirates at Victoria park, Eeilding, on Saturday afternoon. The teams were very evenly matched and the gamo ended 3-all. Lance Jefferies did all the scoring for. the homo team and Air J. E. Coekroft, of Fcilding, held the whistle. Cribhage. The first games in the second cribbage scries w-cro played on Alondav evening. The Stanway A team journeyed to Waituna to meet Waituna B, the result of the match being Stanway 32 games, Waituna 28. Kiimbolton met Dunolly at Waituna ‘and won 31 games against Dunolty’s 29. Social and Dance. A social and dance to raise funds for St. Michael’s Church, Stanway, will be held on Friday, Alay 24, in the local hall. A number of popular Palmerston North and Eeilding artists have promised to assist at the function, while members of Packer’s orchestra will provide the dance music. It is anticipated there will be a large attendance, and intending patrons are assured of a very pleasant evening. Shaky Chimneys. Among the chimneys thought to have been loft undamaged by the recent 'quake it has since been discovered that there is scarcely one in the district that has not suffered more or less, and most of them at least have fo be lowered to the roof level. Settlers in many instances, during the present spell of cold and rough weather are in the unfortunate position of having to‘content, themselves with very meagre fires on account of the danger-

ous state of the chimneys, and it is feared it will bo some time before brick layers will be available. Personal. Air C. H. Paine, master of Tokorangi school, has gone to AVellington as representative of the Oroua branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute annual conference, which is being held this week. Airs. Paine and family journeyed to Levin for the first week of the vacation and will spend the following week at Plimmerton, where they will be joined by Air Paine. Airs. A. C. M. Diceiy and children, of Alarton, we on a visit to Air and Aliss Rowe, of Stanway. Aliss A. Craine, who spent the weekend in Palmerston North with Air and Airs. Walter Jefferies, left Stanway for Haw-era on ALonday, where she expects to spend some weeks. Aliss Myrtle Guy left for Te Ante on Friday last and is tho guest of her uncle, Mr Hector Gill. Air Gordon Alarshall paid a brief visit to Wellington at the week-end. Air Paddy Twigg, Paengaroa, Bay of Plenty, is spending a' few days with his aunt, Airs. W. A. Bailey, Makara road.
