WHY GIRLS ARE HEALTHIER
At a gathering of headmasters in England, Mr E. T. England, of Owen’s School, said:—“There are in England several excellent colleges for women specialist teachers in physical training, but there is not a single one for men. That is very odd, and the reason for this curious neglect is that it has been assumed that a boy’s health is adequately safeguarded by games. Looking at the young women as compared with the young men in employment now and contrasting them with their predecessors 20 years ago, it will be seen that there is now a certain difference between the sexes that was not there then. Twenty years ago physical education for girls was scandalously neglected. The need was great, and they proceeded to meet it. It was not so great with the boys, and so it has never been met. I suggest that the enormous improvement in the healthy dress of women has been influenced by their physical training mistresses, and I have no sympathy whatever with attacks on women’s costumes. There is a very great difference in the modern young woman’s carriage. The dress of young mcD is not as healthy or as beautiful as that of young women, and modern young women carry themselves much better than modern young mon. Physical training of young boys is not as good as that of their sisters, and there is not a sufficient number of expert teachers.”
