SIR HARRY LAUDER

THE WORLD TAMED ENTERTAINER. Most great artists have a hobby, and Sir Harry Lauder is no exception, his hobby being the collecting of weird and wonderful walking sticks of all shapes and sizes the greater number of which could not very well be used for street or even stage use, by reason of their size, weight and value. Every country Sir Harry has visited has contributed to this collection, those of greatest intrinsic value coming from India and tho Far East where during his tour the Potentates presented Sir Harry with beautiful sticks in ivory and ebony, mounted in gold and platinum and set with priceless jewels; while passing through the territory of the Indian Rajahs, Sir Harry was their guest and he was laden with most valuable presents. From a simple crooked stick, grown in Scotland, this collection has grown till to-day it is housed in a .large room in his Scottish homo under the supervision of a manservant. They are all catalogued and when the present tour was decided upon, instructions were given to forward to New Zealand a few specimens for use in Sir Harry’s character sketches. Tuesday evening should see the Opera House packed and Sir Harry and his company are assured of a very hearty welcome. The supporting corn-

pany, which Mr E. j. Carroll has selected'is a 'particularly strong one and includes acts of a most dicersilied nature. Direct from London season, “Tiki” Carpenter, tho surprise packet presents a most artistic; and diverting turn; Miss Beryl Wentworth will be heard in catchy chorus songs and is certain to gain popularity with the audiences; Rupert Ilazcl and Elsie Day, the harmonylarity duo present a delightful comedy sketch, Rupert Hazel will bo remembered by owners of gramophones as the announcer in the famous record “ 3 O.L. ”; the Fredo Bros are world famous for their violin comedy acrobatic act which is described as thrilling and amusing; from the leading Continental variety theatres comes Don Julian, cartoonist and lightning sketch artist, whose patter is said to be a sure laughter raiser; a fine orchestra under the direction of Haydn Beck completes an ideal entertainment. The season in Palmerston North is limited to one night and: the Box Plan opens at the Majestic Buildings, Broadway, this morning.
