Mr. E. K. Mander, Customs’ officer, left for the south on Wednesday by the Wellington express. Hon. T. M. Wilford, Minister of Defence, was in Palmerston North on Wednesday and remained in town overnight, proceeding yesterday to the Hutt. The many friends of Mr C. J. Page,of Ranfurly street, will regret to learn of the death of his mother, who died in Wellington on Monday at the advanced ago of 8f years. Mr Scott Colville, the well-known theatrical manager, is in Palmerston North making arrangements for tho visit of Sir Harry Lauder, tho famous Scottish comedian, who will appear in tho Opera House on Tuesday, May 7.
Mr. W. A. Swinbourn. headmaster of College street school, has been elected to represent the Manawatu teachers at the annual conference of the N.Z.E.I. in Wellington next month. Mr Swinbourn has also been appointed teachers ’ advocate to the Grading Appeal board for tho Wanganui educational district. Mr. F. Bryant, of Tunbridge Wells, England, and formerly a very wellknown resident of Palmerston North, arrived in New Zealand this week, in company with his son, Dr. E. H. Bryant, and is at present staying in town. Dr. Bryant has been practising at Tunbridge' Wells, i and both ho and his father intend to spend several months in New Zealand beforo returning to the Homeland.
