Pleading guilty to a charge of loitering in High street, Dannevirke, for the purposes of betting, William Joseph Donovan, who keeps a tobacconist business, was fined £35 to-day by Mr. J Miller, S.M. The police stated that Donovan s chief business was betting and they believed he was agent for a big bookmaker. j The Magistrate declined to accept the plea of counsel for defendant that Donovan was only a silver bettor, in view of the fact that over £SO was found on him after his arrest, which was the sequel to a cycle ride by Sergeant Martin on March 30, last.
