THE LICENSING ELECTION
To the Editor. Sir, —In the issue of your paper dated March 12th. last (the morning of the recent Licensing Committee Election) I notice a letter signed F. C. Allerby and J. Hodgcns, headed: “Labour asks Questions.” I have been away from homo since the election and have not had any opportunity to reply sooner. Being one of the candidates returned, for which I am thankful to the electors, I am not disposed to let go this letter without a protest. To the question: “Was the advertisement approved of by all members,” —Yes, by me. “Who pays for it?” —Well,'now, that is a problem. I am a bit hard hit just now and may have to take tho hat round for a collection to pay my 'share. I have not, however, made any arrangement whereby anyone has to pay for me, and if the questioners think my vote and independence can be bought, with money or any other obligations they arc a long way off the mark. I have served on local bodies many years—almost continually since the nineties —and I have no intention to depart from honest, straight and upright. dealings. Now I want to ask the Labour candidates why was this letter with suspicions and insinuations published on the morning of the election with no chance of reply from candidates beforo the voters went to tho poll? T am, etc. C. N. CLAUSEN.
