P.N. GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT
PROGRESSIVE TEAR RECORDED. Substantial progress on the part of the Palmerston North Girls' High School during the past year, is set out in the annual report of the chairman of the Board of Governors (Mr. W. E. Birnie) which was presented to last evening’s annual meeting. “During the year the school has made substantial progress. Tho enrolment showed a considerable increase placing the school up one grade. The increase in numbers entitled the school to one additional mistress. Tho vacancy was filled by tho appointment of Miss Walker, M.A. “As so many girls earn their own living nowadays, careful .provision has been made at tho school to equip them for their varying needs by means of the professional and commercial courses. A special domestic course has also been arranged for girls whose futuro work will bo mainly in the home circle. All these courses of work give a thoroughly sound general education, as well as the special equipment required. All the various subjects are in the hands of specialist teachers and the standard of work of the school has been well maintained as is shewn by tho results of the recent examinations, one pupil passing tho first section of the B.A. degree, five being awarded higher leaving certificates, while only one candi date of those offering failed to pass tho matriculation examination. “The school has. a very great asset in its beautiful grounds and lino playing field utilised for various sportstennis, basket-ball, cricke't. and hockey. The members of the staff all assiSt in coaching the girla* in their games and one period per week is especially set apart for .organised games. As a result tho school teams have been most successful in their matches with other schools, and throughout" the school a most beneficial effect can bo seen on the physique and general health of the girls. A further effect is the development of an esprit do corps among them which must show valuable results in the future. “At the School House hostel the year’s results have been satisfactory indeed and the thanks of the board are due to the School House staff for their loyal work and to Mr. Fitzherbert for his work as chairman of the hostel. “An account of the'year’s work would not be complete without reference to the activities of tho Parents' association. The interest the members of this association are taking in tha many phases of school life is having a most stimulating and encouraging effect* / “A concert run by tho phpils of the school was responsible for a considerable addition to the Assembly hall fund and all concerned have to be congratulated on the successful result.”
