Per Press Association. 1 AUCKLAND, Last Night, Early this afternoon, DetectiveSergeant McHugh arrested William John Hogan at the wharves, charging him with carrying on tho business of a bookmaker. Hogan appeared before Mr Cutten, S.H’. at the Police Court later, pleading guilty to the charge. Chief-Detective Hammond produced a double chart which had been seized. This was at £8 to 2/6 on the Thompson and Railway handicaps for the Wellington races. Hogan said he used to be a wharf labourer but lately had been in ill-health. “I took an £8 risk,” he said. “I think you took a £lO risk,” said Mr Cutten, in fining defendant that sum.
