COMPENSATION FOR SEIZURE OF GERMAN MERCHANT VESSELS
Naval Units Barred
WIDE DIVERGENCE OF OPINIONS AS TO VALUE
AMERICA’S LIABILITY. United Press Association—By Eloctri* Telegraph—Copyright. Received Monday, 9.45 p.m. LONDON, March 11. The Morning Post Berlin correspondent says the American arbitrator has given an important decision in connection with compensation to German firms for ships confiscated by the United States during the war. America is only liable for commercial vessels so the arbitrator allowed claims in respect of the North German Lloyd’s Princess Alice and Coblenz and Hamburg Amorika’s Holsatia and Sarabia but rejected claims in respect of Lloyd’s Prince Eitcl Friedrich, Kronprinz Wilhelm, Locksum and tho Hansa ship Licbenfels, on the ground that they were effective Naval units. All other claims are admitted but the assessment of compensation is most difficult. The Gormans say they are entitled to 230,000,000 dollars whereas the American Naval board values tho confiscated ships at 34,000,000 dollars but it is anticipated at Berlin a compromise will be arranged at 100,000,000 dollars.
