ROTORUA-TAUPO RAILWAY LINE TO BE ABANDONED

Quite Unjustified MOTOR SERVICE AMPLE FOE MANY YEARS YEI LAND SETTLEMENT WILL CONTINUE. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Nigbf Cabinet decided to-day that the con* struction of tho Rotorua-Taupo railway (put in hand by the late Government) should be definitely stopped as soon as the men with their families employed there can be transferred to similar work elsewhere. The Prime Minister, in making tha announcement, said: “Ministers cams to the conclusion that the railway was quite unjustified and could not possibly be looked upon as likely to help in any interest contribution to the large cost of construction. This decision does not in any way imply that tho Government will not help to effect the settlement of the pumice country in that locality. As a matter of fact, the Minister of Lands was authorised to take this branch of the matter in hand with a view to making portions of tho land available for settlement and to have a complete analysis of the land made by experts. “Ministers who visited the locality are of opinion that the motor service, on a good road there will more than meet tho whole of the transport requirements in that area for many years to come.”
