THE SMALL HAT
A correspondent, writing in a contemporary, has the following breezy comment on the wearing of tho small hat with distinction:—“l know a girl, a merry sort of girl, with curly hair and twinkling eyes, and an air of carefree youth. She can literally pull on the little ‘pull-on’ hats of tho moment, crushing them down on her wavy mop, without so much as a glance in the mirror—and she can get away with it! But this same girl recently made herself a delicious little frock out of a pair of ancient brown Holland curtains; sho added a jaunty red leather belt, and crammed a little red hat on her head—and she got away with that tool So you sco she is a ‘type.’ I salute her! The majority of us would look awful if we treated ourselves like this. ‘A small hat,’ said my modiste impressively, ‘should be pulled gently on to the head from the crown. It is a mistake to tug it on from the back, for this ruins the bob or shingle beneath. Besides, it is the crown of the head that has to be inside the hat—not the back of tho neck! . Now, take a good look all round to assure yourself that no stray whisps of shingle: peep out. The hair at the back should be completely .covered by the hat. Having arranged this carefully, proceed in the same way with tho sides and the front. Be sure not to show too much hair at the sides; one or two little curls will be quite sufficient. Of course, no hair should be visible in front when one of the fashionable small hats is worn!” I give you her advice verbatim because I think it an excellent lesson on ‘how to put on a hat.’ ”
