LACK OF SUPPORT FOR FLOOD CONTROL SCHEME
FURTHER APPEALS TO BE MADE, When the Manawatu-Oroua River board met yesterday morning, members expressed their disappointment at the lack of support which had been forthcoming from local bodies for their modified schemo of flood control. Following the recent conference of interested local bodies to consider the scheme, theso bodies wore invited by the board to participate in a deputation to the government asking for a £1 for £1 subsidy in order to enable the board to proceed with the work. Members of the board expressed disappointment at the decision of the Manawatu Drainage board not to be represented on the deputation and it was decided to ask the board to reconsider its decision.
As the outcome of the lack of response to the board’s request for support, it was resolved that deputations again wait on tho Kairanga County council, Manawatu Drainage board, Moutoa Drainage board and Palmerston North Borough council, and that the Levin Borough council be also asked to reconsider its decision. Tho board decided to advise Hon. J. G. Cobbe of tho proposed flood control scheme, with which it was anxious that he should become acquainted, and extended an invitation to him to inspect the area. Members expressed surprise at the attitude adopted, it being pointed out that local bodies wero uot being asked to contribute, while a great number of the Manawatu Drainage board’s ratepayers were vitally interested in the scheme. The money would be found from tho government subsidy and the area would benefit according to classification.
