Raising Funds for Baths

FINANCIAL SUCCESS ASSURED

A splendid attendance of visitors witnessed the opening of the Hokowhitu carnival at the school yesterday afternoon, the ceremony being performed by the Mayor (Mr. A. J. Graham). Glorious weather attended the function, the school presenting a goy appearance with its streamers of coloured flags, while the stalls were freely patronised.

The carnival was organised to raise funds for general improvements to the grounds and to further tho erection of itbe school baths, and in view of this, in bis opening remarks Mr. Graham stressed tho importance of swimming, especially in a sea-girt land such as New Zealand, where there were many opportunities to learn, was the knowledge desirable. He told tho children that in times of danger from drowning it was only by being able to swim that they could help themselves and rescue others.

Mr. Graham desired to express to tho older people his delight in spending liis tinic in the interests of the children. There was no greater work than that of catering for the young. Ho congratulated tho committee and residents on tho fine display, and expressed every good wish to them in their great effort to raise funds. He concluded with a few words of hearty commendation for the fine way in which the carnival had been organised.

' All 1 present joined in giving three cheers to Mr. Graham when he had declared tho function open. A striking item was a huge cake offered for competition, which was contributed by Mr. George How, chef of a local hotel. This was iuado as a replica of a royal wedding cake, and was a duplicate of that made for the Queen of Sheba (Miss Kirkcaldie) at the recent Wellington carnival, where it brought in about £IOO. The stalls and games were in charge of the following ladies and gentlemen who had numerous assistants:: —Meat, Mr. Hepburn; fancy goods, Mesdames Huntington and Woodroofo; flowers, Mesdames F. Amos and Heatley; drinks, Mrs. Richardson and.. Miss Hanlon; produce, Mesdames Hepburn, Sutton and Oliver; swcots, Mrs. Spooner *.nd Miss Lane; afternoon tea, Mrs. Tattle; cakes, Mrs. Shailer; jumble ;... . • Merritt and Cooper; books, Mrs. Gill; roll down, Mrs. Voss; hoop la, Air. Battle; mock court, Mr. Woodroofe; "jenny,” Mr. Huntington; bran-tub, Mis 3 U. Heatley; chain-step-ping, Mr. Bloomfield; ham competition, Mr. Lane; nail driving, Mr. Kebbel; sheep-guessing, Mr. J. Scott. Mr. J. A. Nash M.P. acted as judge of the baby shows; Mr. >T. Kyle, of the bonzino tin articles; Mis 3 Jordan, of the cooking; Mrs. Hanlon, tho sugarbag articles; bed making, Mrs. Strode Penney; clothesline hanging, Mrs. H. Smith. Those competitions were in charge of Mrs. Menendez and Mrs. Holmes.

The result of tho competitions were as follow:—Decorated pram: Thelma Cranton 1, Dora Woodroofo 2. Decorated triangle: A. Russell 1, L. Jensen 2. Decorated bicycle: Hazel Bloomfield 1, W. Woodroofo 2. Sponge cake: Mrs. Lucas 1. Scones: Mrs. Rushbrook 1. Sugar bag: Eileen Heatley 1, Margaret Penny 2. Bcnzino tin article: Trevor Burden 1. _ Baby (under six months): Mrs. K. Clark 1, Mrs. Fairless 2. Babv (under 12 months): Mrs. McGrath 1, Mrs. Luff 2. The function was continued last evening when further splendid patronage was bestowed on the stalls. The financial result of tho carnival will not be known for u, tLay or two yet but tho committee is pleased with the ro shits so far. . In connection with the carnival, a queen contest is also being run. Thi* will not bo decided until the middle of March. Hokowhitu has, for the purposes of the contest, been divided into geographical ’districts, each supplying a candidate. Tho positions of the various queens yesterday afternoon were: Bonnie Hepburn (Western) 1, Phyllis Ross (Southern) 2, Ramona Mcnendez (Eastern) 3, Kittio Turner (Northern) 4.
