INVERCARGILL, Last Night. The most Borious bioakdown in tho history of the Southland Electric Power board occurred shortly bofore eight o’clock to-night, when the light and power services here wero out of commission till 9.30. Trams in Invercargill were at a standstill during that period and theatres were plunged into darkness until the standby plants wero brought into operation, while at tho telegraph office, candles were hurriedly brought into uso. There was serious delay at the office of tho Southland Times, where tho linotype machines were idle for nearly two hours and a half, other businesses relying solely on electric power being affected to a lesser extent. Beyond the fact that something had gone wrong at tho headworks at Monowai, nothing definite has been made known concerning tho actual cause of the breakdown.

When the lights failed, efforts were immediately made here to restore the supply from tho steam plant, which was previously in use and by 9.30, this had been accomplished.
