ILLITERATE DEAF-MUTE IS PLAINTIFF IN CASE
COURT IN DIFFICULTY. RELATIVE INTERPRETS BY “LIB LANGUAGE.” “Times” Special.
WANGANUI, Last Night. Judge, counsel and officials at th# Supremo Court laboured under a disadvantage to-day, for a woman plaintiff was s'tono deaf and inarticulate and this involved the assistance of a relative, who put tho questions by means of “lip language.” The plaintiff could neither read nor write and when it came to swear tho relative, the Court crier could not find a form of oath applicable to occasion where lip language was used. His Honour, Mr Justice Smith, came to the rescue and said: “Put the oath to her that she will swear by Almighty God to truly answer and interpret tho questions put to the plainiff.” This oath was administered and tho hearing proceeded slowly.
