PALMERSTON AN INNINGS TOO GOOD FOR SCHOOL
The opening games of the second round of the Manawatu Cricket Association senior competition were concluded on Saturday. Palmerston, which the previous week had made 298 in reply to 55 by High School again dismissed its opponents cheaply for 99, to win by an innings and 144 runs and take four competition points. Henderson, 47 not out, was the only school batsman to make a stand, i’letchor, 17 run out, and Penman 19, were the others to reach double figures. Gallichan, Mullins and Hollier were responsible for the rot. Old Boys went down to R.S.A. by 71 runs on the fi,rst innings. Pacey and W. Cameron, the opening batsmen from the previous week, wont to the crease for Old Boys. Pacey was dismissed, after adding a single. 0 ’Keefe joined Cameron to succumb to Day behind the sticks. Mansford sent back Spring a little later with the score at 3 for 74. Jamieson 15, and Cameron, who was batting well, held up the procession for a while till the former was caught by Bose. Surviving McDonald, W. Cameron lifted one off Tarrant which Day accepted when he had 51 to his credit. The remaining batsmen added 26 runs. B.S.A.’s win was a three-pointer. y j
Bowling analysis: Tarrant, 6 for 53; Duffield, 1 for 25; Upham, none for 12; Mansford, 2 for 20; Bee, 1 for 9; Smith, none for^S. R.S.A. won by 71 runs on the first innings.
JUNIOR GRADE. All Saints v. Old Boys. Playing at the Sportsground, Old Boys secured a three-point win over All
Saints by 138 for eight wickets to 130. For Old Boys, Puklowski 25, Guvey 25 and R. Akuira 33 were the top scorers; the last-named showed himself a stylish batsman. T. Green, the well-known horseman, added one to the winner's tally. Sandman, 3 for 43 and Scorgie, 3 for 62, were the Saints’ best trundlers. Scorgie 45, Fletcher 23 not out and Sandman 17 obtained most runs for the losers. Old Boys’ bowling averages included: Von Sturmer and Gavcy, both 3 for 33. R.S.A. v. Rongotea. R.S.A., with 89 was seven runs too good for Rongotea on the first innings and secured a three-pointer. In the first strike, R.S.A.’s best figures were obtained by Hinks 25 not out, Webster 18 and Mair 17. Amadio took four wickets for 36 runs. Gust 30 and Amadio 11, were the only Rongotea players to reach double figures. Webster, 5 for 22 and Jewett, 5 for 32, kept the scoro down. E.S.A. made 61 in the second essay, whilo Rongotea was 43 for the loss of one wicket when stumps wore drawn. P.W.D. v. High School.
P.W.D., with 182 for the los3 of three wicketc, defeated High School by an innings and 39 runs. Grainger 78, Bennett 44 and Hill 30, kept the school fieldsmen busy. In its first strike, School made 90—Olliver 31 and Arapean 35; in the second 53—Eliott 19, Hill, 5 for 19 and Reunett, 5 for 23, took the wickets in the first and second innings respectively.
