At the inquest into tho death of Arthur Brown Smith and Sydney Smith, .the Harley street cancer specialists, Sir Thomas Carey-Evans, tho eminent surgeon, with whom the brothers carried out a recent operation, said that they refused remuneration, evea their expenses, because it was a hospital case. They even provided their own radium,. which worth £2OOO. . , Another doctor spoke • of how extromclv- alike .they were in appearance and views.. Their conversation showed that they were obviously obsessed by tho -necessity-for more radium in England and better technique in its use. They invariably looked whito and tired, nevertheless they were always cheerful and talked hopefully of the future. A resident of Harley street living in
the same house stated that the Smiths did • not drink or smoke, and did not uso drugs.. They regretted bitterly the state of radium therapy in England and that smaller countries wore ahead of-Britain. They could not repress their feelings. They did not want personal aggrandisement, but worked all- hours -of -the night and, influenced at -least one wealthy man to provide thousands of .pounds’ worth of radium for -a • clinic
