BISHOP’S MARRIAGE BAN IS CRITICISED
CLERICAL SUPPORT. Australian Press Association. Received Sunday, 7.0 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 19. The marriage ban imposed by the Bishop of St. Albans has not passed without controversy. A number oi Bishops and clergy on being asked whether they agreed with.it, preferred not to comment at this stage. The Bishop of Portsmouth declared tho Prayer Book rubric, with its history, in the contcmpory sense of tho words was not intended for those who had not been baptised. The Bishop of Hereford savs he is in entire agreement with the Bishop of St. Albans. The Bishop of Truro says the registry office is pro-, vided for a purpose. The Evening Standard, in an editorial, states perhaps the most curious reflection in their attitudo is that it is much narrower than tho Roman Catholic viewpoint. The folly of the decision is apparent to all but the most narrow eclcsiastics. Mixed marriages will not bo prevented by such episcopal blunders. It is the presence of such episcopal thrones and persons and thus rebellions against the spirit of real religion, law and common sense, have brought the church its present discomforts.
