Four policemen in the early morning visited a house at Grootcgast, near Groningen, occupied by Wykstra, a suspected anarchist. The visit was for the purpose of inquiring into the alleged neglect of six children by the woman with whom Wykstra had been living and whose husband is in gaol. Wykstra furiously seized a rifle, shot all the policemen and cut their throats. He dragged the bodies inside and set fire to the house.

Two plain clothes men at Groningen arrested Wykstra, who was unable to use two loaded revolvers in his pockets, and the woman. The four victims leave wives and children.
