Miss Gleitze Deterred by Cold Water
SEEKING WARM SEAS!
INTERCEDES GLEITZE, the London typiste and distance swimmer, is tired of swimming in cold waters. That is why she is coming to New Zealand to attempt to cross the Cook Strait! New Zealanders, who know their Cook Strait, will be expecting Miss Cleitzo to receive tho surprise of her life when she arrives at the scene of her proposed swim. After four unsuccessful attempts to swim the Irish Channel because of the cold water, Miss Gleitze said: “I just long to feel some warmer water in New Zealand, so far removed from the ice-floes of the North Pole. lam tired of bathing in cold water.” The London girl has heard so much about the Maoris, too, that she feels

that she is irresistibly attracted to New Zealand. She is inspired with enthusiasm to come to the Dominion. Hiss Gleitze had eight attempts before she crossed the English Channel, and five before she conquered the Strait of Gibraltar. Her swim of the English Channel was ridiculed so she made another unsuccessful attempt: How Miss Gleitze will fare in her struggle with Cook Strait waters remains to be seen. Lily Copplestone, of Ashburton, is planning an attempt this summer, too. The only recorded attempt to cross the Strait was by the Aucklander, Konald Webster, a -season or so ago, but he failed because of the cold, after being in the water for several hours.
