RAIL CONSTRUCTION BEING SPEEDED UP

Three Main Lines PUBLIC WORKS GANGS HAVE BEEN REINFORCED SURVEYS PROCEEDING. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. "The Government’s decision actively to proceed with the linking up of the important main lines of the Dominion lias made definite progress," said the Minister of Public Works (Hon. E. A, Ransom) to-day. "The number of men ou the Stratford-Main Trunk railway has been increased at both ends, am! more men aro being placed on tho Napicr-Wairoa section, while the employees on the Westport-Inangahus section have been increased in numbers, and there will be a further extension in this direction.

"As it is important to complete the surveys on the gap in the South Island Main Trunk line," continued tho Minister, “a commencement has already been mado on this work. All the field work has been done on tho AVairoa-Gis-borne section of the Napier-Gisborne line. Survoy work which is needod for continuation of the WestportInangahiia line is to be put in hand shortly.

"As for the Stratford-Main Trunk railway," concluded the Minister, “this has been completely surveyed and all that is necessary is to expedite the progress of tho work in the extremely difficult country in whch the construction workers are now engaged.
