CHRISTCHURCH GRANT FOR THE UNEMPLOYED
ALMOST EXHAUSTED. 3GO NAMES ON BOOKS OF LABOUR BUREAU. Per Press Assoeiation. CHRISTCHURCH, Last Night. Mr. 11. T. Armstrong. M.P., who went north to interview the Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward) regarding further government assistance for tho Christchurch unemployed, has sent tho following telegram to the DeputyMayor (Mr. D. G. Sullivan, M.P.): “I have interviewed the Prime Minister, but he holds out no hope until the government gets its scheme of railway construction going, which will be some time yet. I have asked for help in the meantime, but he says this would have T o be considered by Cabinet next week. ’ ’ The government grant of £2OOO is almost exhausted, and there is little prospect of further relief being given by the city council nr local bodies owing to lack of funds Althougii 360 unemployed were registered at the labour bureau at noon on Saturday, the number of unemployed in the city is considerably in excess of this.
