NEW YEAR’S HAY”. From Our Own Correspondent With great relief local residents awoke on New Year’s morning to find a sky in which blue predominated with the s;un shining brightly at intervals. A falling barometer was totally ignored, and milking linislicd and breakfast over, luncheon baskets were hastily packed, and in a very short time loads of happy families were lo be seen winding their various ways down tin; long country roads. Marton with its popular race meeting claimed some, the jolly Cheltenham sports others, while not a few wore enticed seawards in tin; anticipation of a delightful day at Tangimoana. Oncpuhi, ever a favourite resort for picnics, likewise drew quite a number to enjoy a day on the panks of its picturesque river. About half-past three rain began to fall and kept up steadily for some time which somewhat damped the ardour of pleasure seekers. Later in the afternoon, however, it cleared off enabling everyone to reach home in comfort. Onepuhi Sports. An event that is to take place in the near future, and one that is being looked forward to by everyone in the •district, is the Onepuhi sports meeting. The long .and varied programme will no doubt draw a very large number of sports from far and near, and a most enjoyable day is anticipated. Luxurious Growth of Grass. The luxurious growth of grass this season is necessitating the use of the field, mower on a large number of farms in the district, farmers having discovered that it pays to trim their paddocks rather than allow the grass to run to seed. The present unsettled Weather is interfering badly with haymaking of which there will be a very large amount this year. It is pleasing to report that invalids, with the exception of Mr. H.
