The yearly vital statistics for Palmerston North were not complete on Monday until the closing of the office of the Kegistrar of births, deaths, and marriages at 4.30 p.m. At 8.30 a.m. on the last day of the old year a young couple were married by the Registrar while four births were registered during the afternoon.
The Y.M.C.A. boys had an excellent day in camp at Pohangina yesterday. During the afternoon a largo party of seniors left camp under the command of Mr. Kaufmann on a trek to the Piripiri caves, where they spent lhe night. The boys were well provided with sleeping outfits and had a great time.
‘‘The average attendance at the Otago schools is the best in New Zealand,” said the secretary at a meeting of the Otago Education Board. ‘‘That has been the case for years,” remarked the chairman. ‘‘The attendance for this year,” he added, ‘‘was about 92 per cent.” The attendance officer reported that several schools in country, city and suburban areas were averaging from 94 to 95 per cent of attendance.
During the year 1928 approximately 25 per cent, of the marriage notices issued in Palmerston North were solemnised by the Registrar of births, deaths and marriages. The vital statistics show that this proportion has not increased greatly for the past five years, but it is evident that this method of cementing tho binds of matrimony is in considerable favour. The ceremony, as carried out by the Registrar docs not occupy more than ten minutes all told, so that it has at least brevity to commend it.
