GYMNASTIC CARNIVAL

f m OPERA HOUSE. / STARTS TO-MORROW NIGHT. The whole length of the stage in the Opera- House is needed to make it a large enough “Gym” to hold the performers in the Annual GymnasticCarnival of I the Palmerston North Y.M.C.A. This year 260 young men and ladies, beys and girls, will appear before the footlights. It .makes .a -fine show to see the young men in their flannels and gym singlets in strenuous exercises, or performing various feats of strength—the horizontal and parallel bars, the horse .. and the tumbling mat never fail to provide their thrills. This more muscular side of gymnastic work is brightened by the graceful and rhythmic displays of the ladies’ and girls’ classes, in their various striking costumes designed and made by themselves. Both men and ladies take part in striking pyramid building. The boys and girls also have their important part to play in making the programme, full of interest. Any suspicion that the changing items will drag will be displayed by the fact that the funny men of previous years are taking their .part “seriously ” and will supply a series of side-splitting Interludes. An orchestra of flfteen, under the leadership of Mr, H. W. Pepper, will supply the musical accompaniment, and home made sweets will be sold at the doors by the Ladies’ Auxiliary. This year the carnival will be again held for three nights, tp-mpr-tow, Saturday and Monday. The box plans are now open at the Opera House and patrons are. urgently advised to book immediately.
