Stanway

CONCERT AN DANCE. From Oar Own Correspondent. One of tlio most successful functions ever held in' the Stanway Hall was the concert and dance that took place on Tuesday evening in aid of the Anglican Church funds. Organised and carried into effect by an energetic committee of church workers they are to be highly congratulated upon the success that rewarded their endeavours. Artistically decorated with ferns and bamboo interspersed with large sprays of crimson, pink and white camclias, the hall presented a very festive appearance, and seldom, if ever, has it held, a larger or more appreciative gathering. An attractive programme opened with an instrumental trio (Londonderry Air.) _by Mrs., and .the Misses B. and B. Elliott, piano, ’cello and violin, their artistic rendering of which was a delight to hear. Mrs. Lance Dermer next held the audience enthralled with her exquisite singing of “Still as the Night,” giving as an encore “Smilin’ Thro’. ” “The Wind in the Trees” by Briccialdi, was an Item much appreciated, and cleverly played by Mr. G. H. Paine of Tokorahgi who is a flautist of very high standard. Miss Nellie Green, a talented local artist was heard t 6 perfection in that lovely old song “Beneath Thy Window,” and Mr. G. Fitzpatrick of Fcilding, whom wo too seldom ■ • have tho pleasure of hearing in Stanway, Was in fine voice when he sang “Mountains of Mourne,” Joan Dernier, a young danseuso of great promise, was an attractive little figure garbed os a jockey in white riding breeches, crimson coat slashed with gold and cap en suite, and in her item danced With all the light-hearted abandon of youth. To a veritable storm of applause she responded with a further exhibition of her. graceful art. Mrs. Dormer again captivated the audience with ho delightful rendering of ‘ ‘ Harlequin” and as before was called upon for an encore, choosing in this instance that sweetest of songs “Husheen”. “Grey Clouds” another, instrumental trio by Mrs. Gordon Eliott and her daughters was most expressively played and much appreciated. Chopin’s valse in D flat a Very fine flute solo by . Mr. Paine concluded the .programme. . Mrs. Eliot was tho chief accompanisto of the evening and to her. many .thanks, axe due. ■■ . ■■■!..

In a speech. Canon Petrie gave great credit to the ladies of the committee for their efforts on behalf of the. church, and in having arranged such an excellent programme. Ho complimented Stanway upon it’s talent, and thanked all those who had contributed items, particularly those who had travelled a distance to do so, and accorded to all present a hearty vote of thanks for their attendance. After a plentiful supper had been done full-justice-to a largo and handsome cake made by Mrs. Charles Luxmoorc and iced- and decorated by Miss Mona-Jefferies-was in a- weight-guessing competition tied for by Mrs. F. Craine and the Messrs B. Rink of Makino and, of Feilding, among whom' it was later 'divided. The “Spot” waltz was won by Miss L. Marshall and . Mr. T. Marshall, Mr, Fitzpatrick being called, upon to make presentations for same. Very bright music vfas playedby several members of Packer’s orchestra,, extras being contributed by Mr. B. Wallis of Feilding. Mr, T. Miles jnr. efficiently carried out tho duties of M.C.

1 - • CEIBBAGE. ; Stanway Wins Cup. On Monday evening in the Waitun# hall the Stanway and Waituna A cribbage clubs met to play off for the cup. Stanway having previously scored 7 out of a possible 10 points, with Waituna I - point behind.,...Full of up and downs,- with hopes' and fears Alternating never was a more thrilling timo spent. During the first half of. the evening luck was all in favour of Waituna, its score amounting to 37 against St an way’s 13. New partners being drawn the next game resulted in a fur, ther. win ’for Waituna of- 21 to 14. Stanway by this time \Vas shaking conciderably in its : shoes, when suddenly Dame Fortune, fickle as ever, cast eyes of favour upon itd players, and thereafter nothing With them could go amiss —game after game was won, the evening’s play resulting in Stanway’s being victorious by 33 games to 27, This team therefore now holds tho cup having gained 9 points out of a possible 10, and having gone through tho tournament unbeaten, and with only one draw, namely that with Kimbolton. Mr. J. Batchelor president of the association in a very happy speech congratulated Stauway on its splendid success to which Mr. E. Christian, Stanway’s captain suitably replied. A suitable supper concluded a thoroughly enjoyable evening’s entertainment. Tho presentation of the cup will take place at Waituna next Monday evening. General. One day last week tho energetic men of our school committee betook themselves to tho school grounds where they spent the morning erecting a couple of horizontal, bars. These satisfy a long felt want and will undoubtedly prove of great physical benefit to the children. Mrs T. B-. Arthur, of Takapuna, Auckland, who has been tho guest of Mr and Mrs T. Miles leaves Stanway to-day for Wellington accompanied by Mrs Miles-who will bo for some days the guest of her.brother, Mr. J. Turtjey. Miss M. Miles (Otaki) is at present on a visit to Her sister Mrs A. Marshall.
