HUNGARY ROADS TO COST £1,200,000
THREE CLASSES OF THOROUGHFARE, FOR HEAVY, MEDIUM AND LIGHT TRAFFIC. BUDAPEST. With a. continued betterment in the general financial condition of the country, Hungary is now preparing to modernise more than 3000 kilometers of roadway. An immediate start will be made on 376 kilometers embracing the main Budapcst-Vicnna highway, and a stretch running at right angles from this highway to tho vicinity of Lake Balaton. Bauxite cement will bo largely used, since cement is a conspicuous Hungarian product. Tho Government specifications call for three types of roadway, classified according to traffic. Class I is designed for heavy traffic and will bo built of stone, brick and asphalt, Class 11 for medium traffic will bo built of bituminous concrete, and Class 111 for light traffic will be. constructed of tar, water 'glass (potassium silicate) or cement macadam. About £1,200,000 is tho estimated cost of tho first 376 kilometers. The expense of the new construction will be taken care of out of -the road tax on vehicles. The present road taxes yield about £3,000,000 annually. Added to this is about £1,000,000 annually set aside by the counties for maintenance. With the completion _ of the Buda-pest-Vicnna highway, it is expected that work will commence on the roadways leading to the Serbian frontier. This will enable tourists to cross Hungary from the Austrian to tho Serbian, fronties under th ( o best vehicular conditions. Both Serbia and Greece are now undertaking extensive road improvements, so that within tho next five years, it is believed that'. good motoring conditions will be available all the way from Vienna to Athens,
