ASHHURST-POHANGINA RACING CLUB
ANNUAL MEETING. I' \ V Tlic annual general meeting of the Club was held • on Saturday- evening, there being an attendance- of htty members. The President, Mr. It. MacDonald occupied the chair. The following report was submitted by the In presenting the Annual Statement of Accounts, we have pleasure in reporting that as. a result of the year s operations, a further improvement is shown in the Club’s financial, position. The year. was commenced • with a debit of £307, and after, meptmg all ordinary charges and expending £OB6 on improvements, our liability to tnc Bank stands at £299. , A liberal response from owners end trainers gave excellent nominations, numbering 186, as compared with 151 I'or the previous meeting, and acceptances’ were correspondingly good. With fair weather, good fields, and a satisfactory attendance, there was every indication that last year 7 s totalisator turnover would be eclipsed, but the final figures for the. day showed the investments to total £15,456, as compared with £16,430 for the last meeting, a decrease of £974. This shrinkage can bo accounted for by the fact that only nine investors shared the dividend in the second event of the Siberia Hack Handicap. Improvements effected during the vear included an addition to the Totalisator House, the erection of an additional ten loose boxes at the Club's stables, tbe completion of the new tiaining track, and the painting- of Grandstand, . Totalisato.r House and Stables.
Wc regret to record the loss of two old members of the Club.. In tbe passing of Mr. D. Crowley, the Club loses a Steward who rendered good service for a number of years. Mr. J. H. Vincent was closely associated with the Club in ealier days, he having succeeded Mr. F. Rctcmeyef as Secretary, and, needless to mention, his duties were well performed. Th opportunity having arisen to secure a public, holiday for the Annual Race Meeting, application/ was made for January 22nd ( Anniversary Day),, and this date has been approved by the Racing Conference. ( In moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet the president said that the year had proved quite successful, both from a sporting and financial point of view. The revenue account showed that after writing off £223 for depreciation there was a balance to profit of £370. In referring to the decision to raco on January 22nd it was mentioned that while the meeting had been run with success in the spring, the only opportunity of obtaining a public holiday for our mooting was too tempting to lose. Apart from the fact that the mooting had always been held on an off day, the weather in November was most unreliable and many of our own people were too busily engaged with shearing operations to attend. Being so centrally situated, and with a largo population close at hand to draw from it is predicted that tho meeting on Anniversary Day will become a great holiday attraction and tho club would regain its former position as the premier one day club of the Dortinion. Tho election of officers and stewards for tho ensuing year resulted as follows: — President, Mr, MacDonald, VicePresidents, Messrs. C. Ncilson, and W. Howell; Treasurer, Mr. J. H. Paten; Stewards, Messrs. H. Harper, J. McDonald, H. Knight, E. Leamy, J. Tremowan, A. J. Havill, V 7. Gibb, J. Leamy, A. A. McDonell, T. Close, E. Kerrigan and J. D. Balmer. Now Members. Messrs. E. Batchelor and A. Orr ere elected members.
