LADIES’ HOCKEY
WH.Q.G- BEAT OROTJA &OWNS. , Only one game in the second round of the Mahawatu Ladies' Hockey,Association ’s week-end competition was played on Saturday afternoon, this being between West End Old Girls and Oroua Downs. The former team emerged the victors by three points to nil, Misses S. Needham (1) and E. Jones (2) being responsible for tho goals. Tho match was played at the Sportsground, Mr. W. Broughton refereeing. < Technical School were to havo played BUnnythorpc, but this game had to lie postponed, Technical being in: Napier. The third match put down for. the week-end, Eongotea v, Tokomnru, had to be abandoned, owing to a shortage of players. W.E.O.G. v. Oroua Downs, West End started with a forward run, and after an interval of patchy play in Oroua Downs’ territory, during which Miss Needham-tried for a goal and failed, the same player succeeded in-finding-the net. Oroua Downs then started an attack movement, and West End put in some good defensive work, following which the latter team brought the ball ; down;: Miss Jones scoring by a very clever piece of stick work. From then till.half-time the game was even. From the bully, West End adopted aggressive tactics, and shortly after the commencement of tho second half Miss Jones raised point's in their favour to three. Downs here made a strong rally, and tho match became much more interestin. West End missed an opportunity, and the ball travelled to the other end of the field, where Downs also missed. Play, continued very even, and ;the; gamb ended, without further change— W.E.p.G, 3, Oroua Downs nil. On Friday afternoon at Napier Palmerston North Technical School defeated ‘ Napier Technical College by eight goals to two.
