The temporary relaxation" of tho enforcement of the Regulation prohibiting the use of bbraciis acid in the cure of bacon and hams was authorised on account of tho representations made by tho bacon curing trade of 1 tho very serious losses suffered during the past summer season on accouht of the ah* sonce of boracic acid in their cures/ the Minister of Health, the Hon. J. A Young, advised the House to-day, i* reply to questions .by Mr J. A. Lea (Auckland East). In addition,, the Minister ; chntiadod ■ that representations wore made by the Departments of Scientific and Industrial Research, and of Industries /and"' Commerce stronly urging that the Regulation should be amended to permit of the uso of boraeic acid until such time as the former Department 'could carry; out inquiry and research in the bacon curing industry with a view to the elimination of boracic acid., Both Departments supported their requests by actually, ’ known lowfo* •, made during .the last summer. So soon as, tho large number , of , bacon curors in New Zealand who have relied :bn baracio acid for ; the port.--twenty years or: more in, the pfesery*-' tion of bacon can revise their methods and. equipment and adopt the seiehtihe use of salt,'nitre, sugar,, spices x ana smoking, both public health and private profit would, in tho Minister* opinion, be best served. r ' , The suspension of tho enforcement of tho Regulation was temporary only. It was true that tho usp of acid would permit of ,a moist euro, but there was‘ no reason, to behove that that consideration entered; into ,the representations made by tho protcstants.
