SOLVING AUCKLAND’S TRANSPORT PROBLEM
Setting up of Board Is Suggested Scheme SUBURBAN AUTHORITIES IN FAVOUR Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Juno 8. Important proposals which have in view the ultimate solution of the transport problem in Auckland have been discussed in camera during the week by tho City Council and the combined suburban local bodies. The point at issue is the setting up of Transport Board to deal with tho whole of the city and suburban traffic,, including tho tramway system. Tho proposal was discussed at a conference between three representatives of the City Council and three delegates from the combined outside local bodies. As a result a recommendation was drawn up which was placed separately before tho City Council and a conference of local body delegates last evening. The recommendation provides for the constitution of a Transport Board of 13 members who for the first few years at any rate, will be nominated in the proportion of seven by the City Council and six by the outside local bodies, the board to assume the status anfi functions of the City Council so far as transport undertakings are concerned. Nomination will be on the population basis.
This proposal was placed before an informal meeting of the City Council last evening. No report of the decision arrived at was issued pending it being submitted to the Transport Commission and admitted as evidence. The recommendation was simultaneously submitted to a conference of 22 delegates from tho suburban local bodies. The proposal met with unanimous approval, but must be passed on for the approval of the local bodies represented before it can bo considered finally endorsed.
