KNOWLEDGE OF EMPIRE
TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIPS. FREE TRIP TO CANADA. LONDON, April 26. Young people in every part of the country are entering the great £20,000 Empire Free Travel and Scholarship Scheme, which is being organised for the youth of the nation by the Daily Sketch and its allied newspapers, in co-operation with tho Cunard Steamship Company and the Canadian National Railways. Tho scheme is open to all in the. British Isles between the ages of 8 and 21, irrespective of class or circumstance and without any obligation Fifty free travel awards, entitling the holders to a seven week's tour of Canada this summer, are offered to all between 14 and 31, while 24 scholarships of £SO each will be devoted to the educational advancement of 12 boys and 12 girls between 8 and 14, who in the proposed extension of the scheme in succeeding years will one day be eligible as Empire travellers. Entrants for tho free travel awards and the scholarships will be required to answer a series of general knowledge questions on popular Empire subjects in 20 examination papers. At tho special invitation of the Prince of Wales the winner will visit the E.P. ranch at High River, Alberta, and will see Niagara Falls, Ottawa, the Great Clay Belt of Ontario and Jasper Park in tho Rocky Mountains. Recent tributes include those from tho Bishop of London, Lord Dcsborough, Lord Ashfield, the Earl of Clarendon, the High Commissioners for Canada, Australia and New Zealand, Mr. Walter Hunciman, M.P., and Mrs. Philip Snowdon. Moro than 100 leading cinema theatres throughout the country and many business houses are co-operating actively by offering the winners of the frec-travel awards a supplementary gift of £23 to be used as "pocket money" for the trip to Canada.
