SECOND OPERATION WAS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY
BALLANCE FARMER’S DEATH. EVIDENCE AT INQUEST. Per Press Association. PAHIATUA, June 8. At the inquest on the late Mr. B. R. Croad, a Ballance farmer, who died under an anaesthetic in hospital, the evidence showed that an operation was imperative. Extreme care was taken throughout and the patient was watched very closely. Deceased underwent a first operation on Saturday morning for double hernia, and obstruction of the bowels necessitated another operation on Monday night. The patient collapsed when the operation was practically over. Ether was used, being considered safer than chloroform. The patient did not take the anaesthetic well either time and died from inanition of the heart. The second operation was absolutely necessary, otherwise the patient could not have lived.
The deceased was a personal friend of one of the medical men. A case of this nature was his first experience in 10,000. A verdict was returned in accordance with the medical evidence.
