Bunnythorpe.

From Our Own Correspondent. The friends of Mr and Mrs Robert Stewart, Ashhurst Road, will regret to hear that while returning to Morere with their brother-in-law (Mr W. Tait} after attending the funeral of Mrs Tait, Mr Tait’s car capsized over a bank between Napier nd Morere, Mrs Stewart was thrown out and sustained a broken collar-bone. None of the other occupants of the car was injured beyond minor bruises. Mrs Stewart was taken to the Wairoa hospital for medical attention and she is now progressing favourably. . Mr A. Mitchell, Glaxo staff, who is an inmate of the Palmersto North hospital is now making satisfactory progress towards recovery . Mrs A. Gee is at pi»isent in very indifferent health. ■ After many years of - residence in Bunnythorpe, Mr H. J. Dixon him sold his farm and is leaving the district. The ■ departure of Mr and Mrs Dixon is very sincerely regretted by settlers and particularly by members of the Methodist Church, with . which they have always been associated, Mrs Dixon frequently acting as organist, and both being to the fore in all work for the advancement of their church. Mr Dixon has also done good service on the school committee, where he will be much missed. Their many friends wish them happiness, anij , success wherever they may decide to settle. •The monthly football and hockey dance which was held on Wednesday evening, though not quite so successful financially as the p*svious one, was nevertheless a very enjoyable evening. The combined committee is to be congratulated on the able manner in which these dances are conducted. The Anglican 1 Ladies’- Guild intend holding euchre evenings in the Lodge room once a fortnight on the ’26th June. With substantial points prizes for ladies and gentlemen at the end of the season, these evenings should prove very popular., .. The Rifle Club shoot for Mr Webber’s trophy, fired on Tuesday, resulted as follows:

The A and B teams travel to Awahuri next week in the Cup matches. e .

That pouring treacle is just as good as pouring oil on troubled wtaers has been demonstrated to the satisfaction of Captain Bush and the crew of the steamship Dora (wrote the New York correspondent of the London Daily Chronicle recently). On her way to Philadelphia from Cuba with a cargo of barrels of treacle, she ran into a terriffie storm. Her decks were awash and everything movable on them was carried away. Apparently the vessel was on the point of foundering, despite the crew’s desperate working of the pumps, when it occurred to the captain to try the treacle experiment. It worked like a charm. Darrels were staved in and broken up, and 70,000 gallons of molasses were cast upon the waters. In tho becalmed area that resulted the Dora remained, and safely rode out of the storm.
