AUTOMATIC RIVER GAUGE
TO BE INSTALLED VERY SOON; At the meeting of the Manawaia • Oroua River Board held yesterday, tft was reported that the installation of the automatic river gauge at the Pitzherbert bridge will soon be au accomplished fact. MrW. 1). Carter presided, there being also present: —Messrs. A. E. Twiner, B. G. Gower, and A. Seifert. An apology owing to unavoidable absence in Napier was received from Mr H, Barber. Messrs. H. Akc?s, D. Buchanan, and J. B. 0. Harrison were granted leave of absence on account of illness. The Buckley Drainage Board asked permission to deepen the stream from the railway bridge near the Koputaroa station to the Manawatu River. The plans of the work were .submitted and the engineer reported that the work would not aflicct the interests of the Manawatu-Oroua Board The formal permission was granted. The Public Works Department forwarded plans and a copy of the proposals for erecting a slopbank above the old Shannon bridge on the Manawatu river. I'or the purpose of financing this work the Manawatu County, Council asked that the unexpended balance of authorities made available to the Manawatu-Oroua and Sluggish River boards. The amount was £329| 4s 9d. The Board agreed to the proposal. River Gauge. Mr. Gower, reporting on tho river gauge stated that though Mr Hay had written months ago to the head of tha Telegraphic Department to the most suitable instrument to install, a reply had only been received a few days ago. The instrument which had, been ordered will be installed at the Pitzherbeht bridge at an early date. It will automatically record the height of the river at tho Palmerston North post office at any time, day or night.
