Presidential Candidates Sidestep Awkward issues “AL” SMITH AND THE DEMOCRATS AWKWARD QUESTIONS IN PRESIDENTIAL Jt’JLWm [By Electric Cable-Copyright.] [Anat. and N.Z. Cable Association.] (Received Wednesday 7.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, March 7. Attempts are being made to suppress those issues which might possibly become intense during the Presidential campaigns. Representative Prison, Republican Whip, in a speech, predicted that both parties would side-step prohibition and avoid splits in their ranks. He added that ho did not believe the religious issue would become prominent even if "AI”. Smith did become the Democratic nominee, Mr Mcßride, general superintendent of the Anti-Saloon League, attending the prohibition convention at St. Petersburg (Florida), said: "Governor <AP Smith is the froth that the Democratic Party will blow into nothing ness when the Democratic Convention meets. One term at White House by any ‘Wet’ would set prohibition back a quarter of a century.”
