JUMP INTO WATER,, WIPE BEING RESCUED IN NICK OP TIME Mishap at Pelorous Sound (Per Press Association.) NELSON, Last Night. Tragedy was narrowly averted at Admiralty Bay last evening. Johnnie Mokau, his wife, and child were returning from Pelorous Sound to their home on D’Urville Island. A southeasterly had freshened and his launch was heavily laden. Ho decided to stay the night at the Guards. He had turned towards tho bay when the engine backfired and the launch was soon a mass of flames. The three had to jump overboard. Tho father being a strong swimmer supported the child. Their cries were heard but the Guards’ launch was not in working order and the Turners’ in the next bay were telephoned to. Mr Henry Guard put off in a dinghy and was just in time to catch Mrs Mokau by the hair as she was sinking. Turners’ boat tried to tow the burning launch ashore, but it gave a plunge forward and sank. Mokau was somewhat burnt in trying to extinguish the flames.
